Scripture Power

Scripture reading may not go smoothly for us each day, but we have managed to set up a consistent "Scripture Power" time. For our family, breakfast time works the best. Everyone is home and we have to be out the door the same time everyday, so it can have one certain time and not have to be bounced around. Over the years we have tried lots of methods. We have read straight through the Book of Mormon, gone through Preach My Gospel, read For the Strength of Youth pamphlet, and done topical study. Right before we moved, we were reading through the Book of Mormon again and the kids just weren't feeling it. Michael had an "aha" moment and asked me to whip something up, and this is what we are currently doing:

The spinner! I made the wheel out of a game we got from DI and modge podge. We take turns each morning (which is handy because there are 7 of us!) spinning the wheel and that person is in charge and gets to decide who goes first and then offers the prayer once we are done. We still felt like reading the Book of Mormon was most important, so it's on the wheel 3 times. We also have General Conference, The Living Christ, The Family Proclamation, For the Strength of Youth, and Scripture Mastery. We have all of our supplies in our scripture drawer so whoever is in charge can easily set up whatever we are studying that day. (By the way, all of our supplies were picked up very cheaply in the distribution center area of Deseret Book, I think a few were even free)

Here is a breakdown of how we go about our studying:

Book of Mormon - We keep bookmarks in our Books of Mormon and take turns reading (usually it ends up being 3 turns each).

General Conference - This is the one no one ever seems to spin! The 2 times we've done it have been different, we either watch a conference talk and discuss it or read as much of one as we can out of the Conference Ensign.

The Living Christ - We have gotten this one a lot and have read it straight through, and also starting at the end paragraph and working back, just to jazz it up. It's a great opportunity to talk about the role of apostles in our church.

The Family Proclamation - As with The Living Christ we've gone forward and backward, and we have also taken one paragraph and discussed in detail how that could improve our family.

For the Strength of Youth - The lucky person in charge chooses which topic we will cover and after we read it we answer the questions at the end. And yes, we have covered dating and sexual purity. Awkward, but good to get our standards on the table from the get go. :)

Scripture Mastery - This is my favorite! We got the Book of Mormon scripture mastery cards from Deseret Book and we try to memorize one during our scripture time. We have done carry over days for a couple long ones, but so far we have done the shorter ones. This app makes it fun for our big kids and really helps. They even remember most of them! :)

So that is our current scripture program. I know we'll have to change it up sometime (like everything with kids!), but for now we love it and feel free to copy if you think it will work for you! :)
